The Prophet ﷺ said: "Du'a is worship." (Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud) This brief statement contains everything: supplication is not a supplement to worship — it is worship, perhaps the most intimate form. Each time you raise your hands to Allah, you affirm tawhid: that He alone can help, harm, give, or withhold.

Yet many Muslims feel frustrated when their duas seem to go unanswered. The issue is rarely the dua itself. More often it lies in how we understand the relationship between servant and Lord — and the etiquette that connects them. Understanding this transforms dua from something we do out of habit into a living conversation with Allah.

The Etiquette (Adab) of Dua

  1. Begin with praise of Allah and salawat on the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ heard a man making dua without first praising Allah or sending salawat, and said: "This man was hasty." Then he taught: "When any of you makes dua, let him begin by glorifying his Lord, then send salawat on the Prophet ﷺ, then ask for what he wants." (Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud) This opening is not a formality — it is a declaration of who Allah is before stating what you need.
  2. Address Allah by His beautiful names (Al-Asma al-Husna). Allah says: "And to Allah belong the most beautiful names, so call upon Him by them." (Quran 7:180) Use the name most relevant to your need: Ya Rahman when you seek mercy, Ya Razzaq when you seek provision, Ya Shafi when you seek healing.
  3. Ask with certainty (yaqeen). The Prophet ﷺ said: "When one of you makes dua, let him be resolute in asking, and let him not say: 'O Allah, give me if You will.' For there is nothing to compel Allah, and no one is too great for Allah to give to." (Bukhari, Muslim) Hesitation in dua implies doubt about Allah's ability or willingness — both of which are unfounded.
  4. Raise your hands. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Indeed, Allah is Most Generous and Kind, and He is reluctant to turn His servant away empty-handed when he raises his hands to Him." (Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah) Raising the hands is the recommended physical posture of supplication.
  5. Do not be hasty. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The dua of one of you will be answered as long as he is not hasty, saying: 'I made dua but it was not answered.'" (Bukhari, Muslim) A dua not yet answered in the way you expected is not the same as a dua that was rejected.
  6. Ensure your earnings and food are lawful. The Prophet ﷺ described a man on a long journey raising his hands: 'O Lord! O Lord!' But his food was unlawful, his drink was unlawful, his clothing was unlawful, and he had been nourished with what is unlawful — "so how can his dua be answered?" (Muslim) Halal sustenance is among the most important conditions for an accepted dua.

The Best Times for Dua

  • The last third of the night. Every night Allah descends to the lowest heaven and calls: "Is there anyone calling upon Me that I may answer him? Is there anyone asking of Me that I may give him? Is there anyone seeking forgiveness that I may forgive him?" (Bukhari, Muslim) This is the time of Tahajjud.
  • Between the adhan and iqamah. The Prophet ﷺ said: "A dua made between the adhan and iqamah is not rejected." (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi) This short window before every congregational prayer is a consistent opportunity.
  • While in sujud (prostration). The Prophet ﷺ said: "The closest a servant is to his Lord is when he is in prostration, so make much dua." (Muslim) Pressing your forehead to the ground in humility before Allah is the most fitting moment to ask.
  • On Friday, in the blessed hour. The Prophet ﷺ said there is a time on Friday in which no Muslim stands in prayer and asks Allah for anything except that Allah gives it to him. (Bukhari, Muslim) Many scholars identify this as the period between Asr and Maghrib.
  • When breaking the fast. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Three supplications are not rejected: the dua of the fasting person when he breaks his fast, the dua of the just leader, and the dua of the oppressed." (Tirmidhi) The moment of iftar is one of the most potent windows for dua.

Why Does Allah Delay the Answer?

The Prophet ﷺ said: "There is no Muslim who calls upon Allah with a dua containing no sin or severing of family ties, except that Allah gives him one of three things: either He hastens his request, or He stores it for him in the Hereafter, or He diverts an equivalent harm from him." The Companions said: "Then we will make much dua!" He ﷺ replied: "Allah is more." (Tirmidhi, Ahmad) This hadith demolishes the idea of an 'unanswered' dua. There is no such thing.

Understanding this changes everything. A dua is not a transaction — it is a conversation. Allah may give you what you asked for, or something better than what you could have imagined, or protection from a harm you never knew was coming. The key is not to let impatience cut the conversation short. See also our guide to istighfar, which the scholars describe as unlocking the gates of answered dua.

🤲
Is my old dua wasted?
Never. If it was not answered in this world, it is either a treasure stored for the Hereafter or protection Allah granted you without your knowledge. Not a single sincere dua is ever lost.
🕰️
Should I repeat the same dua?
Yes. The Prophet ﷺ would repeat a dua three times. Persistence is a sign of sincerity. Never give up on a dua — the Prophet ﷺ said no Muslim's supplication goes unanswered. (Bukhari, Muslim)
🌙
Can I make dua in any language?
Yes. Most scholars agree that dua can be made in any language. Unlike the recitation of Quran in salah, dua is a personal conversation with Allah who understands all languages and what is in every heart.
💫
What makes a dua more likely to be accepted?
Combine multiple conditions: a blessed time, a pure heart, halal earnings, beginning with praise of Allah and salawat, asking with certainty, and persisting without impatience.
