The masjid is one of the most beloved places on earth to Allah. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'The most beloved places to Allah are the mosques, and the most disliked places to Allah are the markets.' (Muslim) Knowing how to enter, behave, and leave the masjid with proper etiquette is itself a form of worship — a way of honouring the house of Allah and maximising the reward of every visit.

Before You Arrive: Cleanliness and Preparation

The first step in masjid etiquette begins before you arrive. Ritual purification is essential: the Prophet ﷺ would perform wudu before going to the masjid, and it is strongly recommended to do so. Clean, modest clothing is required. One should avoid eating raw garlic or onion before attending the masjid, as the Prophet ﷺ forbade those who had eaten them from entering until the smell had gone, so as not to disturb other worshippers (Bukhari, Muslim). Perfume is encouraged for men when going to the masjid, while women are asked not to wear strong fragrance in public.

Entering the Masjid: Step by Step

  1. Enter with your right foot first — this is a well-established Sunnah for entering blessed places.
  2. Send salawat on the Prophet ﷺ, then recite the dua for entering (see below).
  3. Lower your voice immediately upon entering and maintain calm and composure.
  4. Pray tahiyyat al-masjid — two rak'ahs to greet the mosque — before sitting down (see below).
  5. Fill the rows from the front, moving into gaps where possible rather than stepping over those already seated.
اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ
Allahumma iftah li abwaba rahmatik

"O Allah, open for me the gates of Your mercy." The dua recited upon entering the masjid. (Muslim)

Tahiyyat al-Masjid: Greeting the Mosque

Abu Qatadah (RA) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: 'If any of you enters the masjid, let him not sit until he has prayed two rak'ahs.' (Bukhari, Muslim) These two rak'ahs are called tahiyyat al-masjid — the greeting of the mosque — and they are a confirmed Sunnah. They are omitted only when the obligatory prayer is about to begin, or during the brief times when prayer is disliked. Outside of those situations, pray them before sitting, even if only briefly.

The mosques of Allah are maintained only by those who believe in Allah and the Last Day, and establish prayer and give zakah, fearing no one except Allah. It is those who are expected to be among the rightly guided.

At-Tawbah 9:18

Behaviour Inside the Masjid

  • Keep your voice low at all times — talking loudly is disrespectful to those praying and reciting Quran.
  • Turn off or silence your phone before entering.
  • Do not step over people already seated in the rows; fill gaps from the front.
  • Do not engage in worldly business transactions inside the masjid.
  • Do not argue or quarrel inside — the masjid is a sanctuary for the remembrance of Allah.
  • Face the qiblah when making dua or reciting Quran if you are not in prayer.
  • Keep the space clean — do not bring strongly scented or messy food into the prayer area.
  • If a child is misbehaving, handle it calmly and quietly without disturbing the congregation.

The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Allah has made the masjid a place of mercy and healing.' Every act inside it should reflect that sacred purpose. To ensure your prayer inside the masjid is as complete as possible, see our guide on how to pray salah step by step.

Leaving the Masjid

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ
Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik

"O Allah, I ask You for Your bounty." The dua recited upon leaving the masjid, stepping out with the left foot first. (Muslim)

When leaving, step out with the left foot first and recite the dua above. It is Sunnah to send salawat on the Prophet ﷺ before reciting it. The transition from the masjid back into daily life is a moment to carry the tranquillity of worship outward — maintaining the presence of mind cultivated inside.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

🧴
Strong Odours
Raw garlic, onion, or any strong smell should be avoided. The Prophet ﷺ instructed that those who have eaten them must not come near the mosque until the smell has gone. (Bukhari, Muslim)
📵
Phone Left on Loud
A phone ringing during salah can break the concentration of an entire congregation. Silence it before entering — not just during prayer, but as soon as you step through the door.
🪑
Sitting Without Tahiyyat
Many people sit immediately upon entering. The Sunnah is to pray two rak'ahs of tahiyyat al-masjid first. Even if short on time, this brief greeting carries great reward.
🛒
Commercial Talk
The Prophet ﷺ warned against conducting trade inside the masjid. Discussions about business, prices, or deals should be kept outside the mosque's walls.
