Salatul Duha — the mid-morning prayer, also known as the Chasht prayer — is one of the most praised voluntary prayers in Islamic tradition and one of the most neglected. While most Muslims are diligent about their five daily prayers, Duha is prayed by surprisingly few. This is a real loss, because the Prophet ﷺ urged his closest Companions to make it a lifelong habit and described it as fulfilling a form of charity owed to every joint in the human body. If you have never prayed Duha, or only occasionally, this guide shows you exactly when, how, and why.

When Is Salatul Duha Prayed?

Salatul Duha begins after the sun has fully risen — roughly 15 to 20 minutes after sunrise — and ends just before the sun reaches its zenith, which is the moment Dhuhr time begins. The preferred time within this window is when the morning heat has intensified, approximately one quarter of the way into the forenoon. You may pray it at any point in this range; even if you begin later in the morning, it counts as long as you complete the prayer before midday.

How Many Rak'ahs Is Salatul Duha?

  • Two rak'ahs (minimum): Abu Hurairah (RA) said the Prophet ﷺ advised him to pray two rak'ahs of Duha every day as a lifelong practice. (Bukhari, Muslim)
  • Four rak'ahs: a common and well-established amount practiced by many Companions.
  • Eight rak'ahs: Umm Hani (RA) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ prayed eight rak'ahs of Duha on the day of the Conquest of Mecca, giving salam after every two. (Muslim)
  • Most scholars hold the maximum to be eight to twelve rak'ahs. All are prayed in pairs with a salam after each set of two.

The Prophetic Foundation: Charity for Every Joint

وَيُجْزِئُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ رَكْعَتَانِ يَرْكَعُهُمَا مِنَ الضُّحَى
wa yujzi'u min dhalika rak'atani yarka'uhuma min al-duha

"Two rak'ahs prayed in the Duha time suffice for all of that." Narrated by Abu Dhar (RA) as part of a longer hadith reporting the words of Allah. (Muslim)

The fuller context of this hadith is remarkable. The Prophet ﷺ reported that Allah says every morning, charity is due from each of the 360 joints in the human body: every Subhanallah is charity, every Alhamdulillah is charity, every tahleel and takbeer is charity, commanding good is charity, and forbidding evil is charity. Then comes the key conclusion: two rak'ahs of Duha satisfy the obligation for all 360 joints combined. Scholars have called this one of the most efficient acts of worship in the entire Sunnah — a short prayer that covers a massive daily requirement of gratitude.

How to Pray Salatul Duha, Step by Step

  1. Make wudu as for any prayer (see our complete wudu guide).
  2. Form the intention in your heart to pray the Duha prayer — no verbal utterance of niyyah is required.
  3. Pray two rak'ahs. Any surahs after Al-Fatiha are valid; Surah Ad-Duha (93) is a natural choice given its name and themes.
  4. Give salam after the two rak'ahs. To pray more, continue in pairs — 4, 6, or 8 rak'ahs — giving salam after each pair.
  5. Make any personal dua you wish. There is no specific mandated supplication after Duha.

Four Reasons to Revive Salatul Duha

🌅
Covers 360 daily charities
Two rak'ahs of Duha fulfil the charity obligation owed from every joint in your body each morning, according to a hadith in Muslim.
🤲
A prophetic wasiyyah
Abu Hurairah (RA) said the Prophet ﷺ bequeathed three lifelong practices to him: Duha, Witr before sleeping, and three days of fasting each month. (Bukhari, Muslim)
⏱️
As little as three minutes
The minimum is two rak'ahs — a few minutes between sunrise and noon. Few acts of worship offer so much reward for so little time.
🕊️
Gratitude at the start of the working day
Duha is the prayer of gratitude for the gift of a new morning. It sets the tone for your entire day with conscious remembrance of Allah.

Salatul Duha is best understood as the companion to Fajr: if Fajr opens the day in the stillness before dawn, Duha anchors the heart as the day's activity begins. For practical tips on making the first prayer consistent, see our guide to waking up for Fajr on time.
