Friday holds a rank unlike any other day in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ described it as the best day of the week — a day of gathering, remembrance, prayer and dua that returns every seven days like a weekly celebration. Understanding its virtues transforms the Friday prayer from a routine obligation into a day of heightened worship and spiritual renewal.

O you who have believed, when the call to prayer is made on the day of Jumu'ah, then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.

Al-Jumu'ah 62:9

The Most Honoured Day of the Week

خَيْرُ يَوْمٍ طَلَعَتْ عَلَيْهِ الشَّمْسُ يَوْمُ الْجُمُعَةِ
Khayru yawmin tala'at 'alayhi al-shamsu yawmu al-Jumu'ah

"The best day upon which the sun rises is Friday." The Prophet ﷺ then mentioned that Adam was created on this day, entered Paradise on it, and was sent down from it. He also stated that the Day of Judgement will fall on a Friday. (Muslim 854)

Friday is therefore marked by the most significant events in human history — from the creation of our father Adam to the final reckoning. Treating it as an ordinary weekday is to miss one of the most powerful gifts in the Muslim's week.

The Special Hour of Accepted Dua

One of the greatest blessings of Jumu'ah is a specific hour during which any sincere dua is accepted. The Prophet ﷺ said:

Fihi sa'atun la yuwafiquha 'abdun muslimun wa huwa yusalli yas'alu Allaha shay'an illa a'tahu iyyah

"In it there is an hour during which no Muslim servant stands in prayer asking Allah for something except that He gives it to him." (Muslim 854, Abu Dawud)

Scholars differ on exactly when this hour falls. The two most widely supported opinions are: (1) the hour the imam sits between the two khutbahs, and (2) the last hour before Maghrib on Friday. The second is widely observed as the prime time for dua, making the period after Asr on Friday a moment every Muslim should protect.

The Sunnahs of Jumu'ah

  • Ghusl (full ritual bath) before Jumu'ah prayer. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Washing on Friday is obligatory on every adult Muslim." (Bukhari, Muslim).
  • Wearing clean clothes and applying perfume (for men), and going to the masjid early to secure a front row and make dua while waiting.
  • Reciting Surah Al-Kahf on Friday — a practice recommended by scholars of hadith based on authenticated narrations of light shining between two Fridays.
  • Abundant salawat on the Prophet ﷺ. He ﷺ said: "Send abundant salawat upon me on the day of Friday and the night of Friday." (Abu Dawud).
  • Making dua after Asr, keeping the hope of catching the special blessed hour alive until the sun sets.

The Obligation and Virtue of Jumu'ah Prayer

The Friday prayer is a communal obligation on every free, adult, sane Muslim male who is a resident. The Quran commands it directly in 62:9 and the Prophet ﷺ warned sternly against abandoning it. In Sahih Muslim and Abu Dawud a narration states: "People must cease neglecting Jumu'ah, or Allah will seal their hearts and they will then be among the heedless." Understanding how to pray is the foundation, but Jumu'ah is a distinct weekly act of worship with its own gravity.

For those still building their prayer habit, Jumu'ah is often the first prayer that truly feels communal. Coming early, listening to the khutbah and praying alongside fellow Muslims is an experience unlike the five daily prayers offered alone. That feeling of unity is itself one of the blessings the Prophet ﷺ was pointing to.

A Complete Friday from Thursday Evening

  1. Begin sending salawat on the Prophet ﷺ from Thursday evening — the Islamic Friday begins at Maghrib.
  2. Prepare your clothes and plan your Ghusl so nothing delays you in the morning.
  3. Start Surah Al-Kahf before or after Fajr, completing it before the Khutbah.
  4. After Asr, make sincere dua with focus, taking advantage of the potential blessed hour.
  5. Close the day with the evening adhkar, keeping the spiritual momentum of Jumu'ah until Maghrib.

Jumu'ah is not a prayer slot — it is the weekly peak of Muslim worship, a complete day encompassing purification, early arrival, attentive listening, communal prayer, remembrance, dua and gratitude. Treating it that way is what the Prophet ﷺ intended when he called it the best day the sun has ever risen upon.
