Ayatul Kursi (آيَة الْكُرْسِيّ), the Verse of the Throne, is verse 255 of Surah Al-Baqarah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ called it the greatest verse in the Quran. In a famous hadith he asked Ubayy ibn Ka‘b which verse of the Book of Allah was the greatest, and when Ubayy answered Ayatul Kursi, the Prophet ﷺ struck him on the chest and said: “May knowledge delight you, O Abu al-Mundhir.” (Muslim)

In a single verse it declares the absolute oneness, life, knowledge and sovereignty of Allah. Memorising it and reciting it daily is one of the simplest, most rewarding habits a Muslim can build.

The Full Verse

اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ
Allahu la ilaha illa Huwa, Al-Hayyul-Qayyum

“Allah, there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence.” The opening of the verse, and the foundation of tawhid.

Transliteration (full verse): Allahu la ilaha illa Huwa, Al-Hayyul-Qayyum. La ta’khudhuhu sinatun wa la nawm. Lahu ma fis-samawati wa ma fil-ard. Man dhal-ladhi yashfa‘u ‘indahu illa bi-idhnih. Ya‘lamu ma bayna aydihim wa ma khalfahum. Wa la yuhituna bi-shay’in min ‘ilmihi illa bima sha’. Wasi‘a kursiyyuhus-samawati wal-ard. Wa la ya’uduhu hifdhuhuma. Wa Huwal-‘Aliyyul-‘Azim.

Allah, there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth... His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

Al-Baqarah 2:255

What the Verse Teaches

Every clause carries a pillar of belief about Allah: His oneness (la ilaha illa Huwa), His perfect life and self-sufficiency (Al-Hayyul-Qayyum), His freedom from any weakness like sleep, His total ownership of creation, His unmatched knowledge of the past and future, and the vastness of His Kursi over the heavens and the earth. To recite it with understanding is to renew your tawhid several times a day.

A Daily Shield
It is a central part of the morning and evening adhkar. Pair it with the daily routine in our evening adhkar guide for consistent protection.

When to Recite Ayatul Kursi

  1. After every obligatory prayer, the most emphasised time, linked directly to Paradise in the hadith above.
  2. Before sleeping, for protection through the night.
  3. In the morning and evening adhkar, as part of your daily remembrance (see our Morning Adhkar guide).
  4. When leaving the home or feeling fear, as a means of seeking Allah’s protection.

If you have not yet memorised it, start with the first line and add a clause each day. Within two weeks most people can recite the whole verse from memory. Reflecting on the names of Allah it contains, Al-Hayy, Al-Qayyum, Al-‘Ali, Al-‘Azim, makes the meaning come alive.
