The evening adhkar (adhkar al-masa) are a set of supplications the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ recited at the end of each day. Together with the morning adhkar, they form a daily shield of remembrance that the early Muslims never abandoned. They take only a few minutes but carry immense protection and reward.
So be patient. Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth. And glorify the praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting.
Ghafir 40:55When to Recite the Evening Adhkar
The time for the evening adhkar begins after Asr and extends until sunset, though many scholars allow it until the early part of the night. The key is consistency: choose a fixed point in your routine, such as straight after Asr prayer, so you never miss it.
The Core Evening Supplications
1. Ayatul Kursi (once)
Reciting Ayatul Kursi grants a guardian from Allah and keeps Shaytan away until morning. It is the single most powerful verse to begin your evening remembrance with.
2. The Three Quls (three times each)
Recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas three times each. The Prophet ﷺ said they suffice a person against everything. (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi)
3. The Master of Seeking Forgiveness
The opening of Sayyidul Istighfar. The Prophet ﷺ said whoever says it in the evening with certainty and dies that night will enter Paradise. (Bukhari)
4. Seeking Refuge and Contentment
- A‘udhu bi kalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq (3x), “I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He created.”
- Bismillahil-ladhi la yadurru ma‘asmihi shay’... (3x), seeking protection in the name of Allah, with which nothing can cause harm.
- Radytu billahi Rabban, wa bil-Islami dinan, wa bi-Muhammadin ﷺ nabiyyan (3x), “I am pleased with Allah as my Lord, Islam as my religion, and Muhammad as my Prophet.”
5. Glorification (100 times)
Whoever says it 100 times in the morning and evening will not be surpassed on the Day of Judgement except by someone who said the same or more. (Muslim)
How to Build the Habit
- Anchor it to Asr prayer so it has a fixed place in your day.
- Start with three or four of the adhkar above and add more over time.
- Use a booklet such as Hisnul Muslim, or an app with the adhkar and a counter.
- Recite with presence of heart, understanding the meaning multiplies the reward.
Pairing the evening adhkar with your daily duas turns the close of each day into a moment of protection, gratitude and peace.
