Dua After the Adhan: The Supplication After the Call to Prayer

The adhan marks the call that gathers Muslims to prayer five times a day. But the Sunnah does not end with the final word of the call. The Prophet ﷺ taught a precise etiquette for responding to the adhan and a powerful dua to recite once it falls silent. These brief moments before rising for prayer carry a reward that is easy to earn yet often overlooked.

Responding to the Adhan, Phrase by Phrase

The Prophet ﷺ said: “When you hear the adhan, say what the muadhdhin says.” (Muslim) This means repeating each phrase after the muadhdhin quietly or in a low voice. There are two exceptions: when the muadhdhin says Hayya ‘ala-s-salah (come to prayer) and Hayya ‘ala-l-falah (come to success), you do not repeat those words. Instead you say:

After the Fajr adhan, when the muadhdhin says As-salatu khayrun min an-nawm (prayer is better than sleep), you repeat this same phrase back.

Sending Salawat on the Prophet ﷺ

Once the adhan ends, the next act is to send blessings on the Prophet ﷺ. He said: “When you hear the muadhdhin, say what he says; then send salawat on me, for whoever sends one blessing on me, Allah will send ten blessings on him.” (Muslim) This one step multiplies its own reward tenfold.
