The Dua of Yunus (AS): the Supplication from the Darkness

Among all the duas preserved in the Quran and Sunnah, few carry the weight of Prophet Yunus's call from inside the belly of a whale, in the depths of the sea, in the darkness of the night. Three layers of darkness, and yet Allah heard him. This supplication — known in Islamic tradition as Dua Yunus or the dua of Dhu'l-Nun (the Possessor of the Whale) — is among the most powerful a Muslim can make.

The Story of Yunus (AS) and the Three Darknesses

Allah says in the Quran: “And [remember] the man of the whale [Yunus], when he went off in anger and thought We had no power over him. Then he called out in the darknesses: 'There is no god but You; glory be to You. Indeed I have been of the wrongdoers.' So We responded to him and saved him from distress. And thus do We save the believers.” (Surah Al-Anbiya, 21:87–88)

Scholars of tafsir identify three 'darknesses' in this verse: the darkness of the whale's belly, the darkness of the deep sea, and the darkness of the night. Yunus (AS) had left his people before receiving permission from Allah, and found himself swallowed by a whale. In this state of total helplessness, completely cut off from the world, he turned to Allah with complete sincerity — and was freed.

The Hadith: Promised to Be Answered

The Prophet ﷺ said, as reported by Tirmidhi: “The supplication of Dhu'l-Nun when he called upon Allah while in the belly of the whale was: 'La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu min al-zalimin.' Indeed, no Muslim man calls upon Allah with this supplication for any matter, except that Allah responds to him.”

Tirmidhi graded this hadith as hasan sahih (good and sound). Scholars note that the promise is conditional on sincerity — the dua must be recited with genuine belief in its meaning, not merely as a formula. The three phrases address the root causes of hardship: forgetting Allah's oneness, neglecting His glorification, and failing to acknowledge one's own shortcomings. Together, they represent a return to Allah in the fullest sense.

When to Recite the Dua of Yunus

• In times of hardship and distress — this is its primary occasion. When you feel trapped or helpless, recite it as Yunus did.
• During sujood (prostration) — the Prophet ﷺ encouraged abundant dua in sujood. The closeness to Allah in prostration makes it a fitting time for this supplication.
• In the last third of the night — when dua is most likely to be accepted, adding Dua Yunus to your supplication is a powerful practice.
• After the obligatory prayers — as part of your post-prayer remembrance, alongside the other adhkar.
• Whenever the heart feels distant — the combination of tawhid, tasbih and tawbah in this dua is itself a remedy for spiritual hardening.
