Jumu'ah is not simply a congregational prayer; it is the weekly celebration of the Muslim community and the 'eid of every week. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday." (Muslim) Beyond attending the obligatory prayer, the Sunnah outlines a rich set of etiquettes and acts of worship that transform Friday into the most spiritually productive day of the week.

Why Friday Is the Master of Days

On Friday, Adam (AS) was created, he entered Paradise, and on it he descended to Earth. The Day of Judgement will also occur on a Friday. (Muslim) It is the day Allah set apart for this ummah, and the virtues of Jumu'ah are immense. With such a status comes the opportunity to maximise worship through its specific sunnahs.

The Sunnahs of Friday Morning

  1. Ghusl (ritual bath): The Prophet ﷺ said: "Performing ghusl on Friday is an obligation upon every adult Muslim." (Bukhari, Muslim) The majority of scholars consider it a strongly recommended sunnah. Perform it before heading to the masjid.
  2. Wear your best, cleanest clothes: Choose your finest garment for Jumu'ah. White clothing is especially encouraged in the Sunnah.
  3. Apply perfume: Men are encouraged to use attar or perfume before Jumu'ah. (Abu Dawud)
  4. Go early to the masjid: The Prophet ﷺ said that the one who goes in the first hour is like one who sacrificed a camel, the second hour like a cow, the third like a ram, and so on. (Bukhari)
  5. Walk to the masjid, if possible: Every step taken to Jumu'ah is rewarded like an entire year of voluntary fasting and prayer for each step. (Tirmidhi)

Reciting Surah Al-Kahf

Whoever reads Surah Al-Kahf on Friday, a light will shine for him from beneath his feet to the clouds of the sky, and it will shine for him on the Day of Judgement.

An-Nasa'i

Recite Surah Al-Kahf on Friday — either during the day or on Friday night (after Maghrib on Thursday). The window opens at sunset Thursday and closes at sunset Friday. Keep a copy accessible and make it a weekly habit; this single act provides light between you and the Ka'bah and protection from the trial of the Dajjal.

The Etiquette of the Khutbah

When you arrive at the masjid before the imam ascends the minbar, pray tahiyyat al-masjid — two rak'ahs to greet the mosque. Once the imam begins the khutbah, a specific set of rules applies:

  • Listen attentively and do not speak. The Prophet ﷺ said: "If you say to your companion 'Be quiet' while the imam is giving the khutbah, you have spoken vanity." (Bukhari, Muslim)
  • Avoid touching pebbles, phones, or anything that distracts from the khutbah. Even gesturing is discouraged during the sermon.
  • If you arrive while the imam is already giving the khutbah, pray two short rak'ahs quickly before sitting down, as the Prophet ﷺ instructed a man who came in and sat without praying. (Bukhari, Muslim)

The Special Hour of Accepted Du'a

Allah has placed a special hour on Friday in which no Muslim asks for something good except that Allah grants it. (Bukhari, Muslim) Scholars differ on its exact timing. The two strongest opinions are: the time between the imam sitting on the minbar and the end of Jumu'ah prayer, or after Asr until Maghrib on Friday. Seize both windows with heartfelt, sincere du'a. Do not let this priceless opportunity pass in idle conversation.

Sending Salawat on the Prophet ﷺ

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammad

Increase your salawat on the Prophet ﷺ on Fridays. He said: 'Send abundant salawat upon me on Friday, for your salawat are presented to me.' (Abu Dawud, An-Nasa'i)

Your Friday Checklist

🚿
Ghusl and best clothes
Perform ghusl before Jumu'ah, wear your finest clothes, and apply perfume (men). A pure, dignified presentation is part of the honour of the day.
🕌
Go early
Arriving in the first hour before the khutbah carries the reward equivalent to sacrificing a camel in the way of Allah — a tremendous incentive not to rush at the last minute.
📖
Read Surah Al-Kahf
Recite Surah Al-Kahf on Friday or Friday night. Light will radiate from you until the following Friday and protect you from the trial of the Dajjal.
🤲
Du'a after Asr
Don't let the special hour of accepted du'a pass — especially the period between Asr and Maghrib on Friday. Ask Allah with sincerity for what matters most.
