Ghusl is the ritual washing of the whole body to remove a state of major ritual impurity (janabah). Without it, prayer and several other acts of worship are not valid. It is simpler than many people fear: at its core it is a sincere intention plus water reaching the entire body.

When Does Ghusl Become Obligatory?

  • After marital relations (whether or not there is release).
  • After the release of sexual fluid through climax, including a wet dream.
  • After the end of menstruation (hayd).
  • After the end of post-natal bleeding (nifas).
  • Upon death (the body is washed by others), and it is recommended before Jumu'ah and the two Eids.

The Obligatory Minimum

Scholars summarise the essential, obligatory part of ghusl as two things: the intention (niyyah) to purify from major impurity, and water reaching every part of the body, including rinsing the mouth and nose according to many scholars, and the roots of the hair and the skin. If those are fulfilled, the ghusl is valid. Everything else below is the recommended, complete prophetic way.

The Complete Prophetic Method, Step by Step

This is based on the description of the Prophet's ﷺ ghusl narrated by Aisha and Maimunah (RA) in Bukhari and Muslim:

  1. Make the intention in your heart to purify from major impurity, and say Bismillah.
  2. Wash both hands three times.
  3. Wash the private parts and remove any impurity from the body.
  4. Perform a complete wudu as you would for prayer (see our wudu guide).
  5. Pour water over the head three times, working it into the roots of the hair so the water reaches the scalp.
  6. Wash the entire body, starting with the right side then the left, ensuring no spot is left dry.
  7. Wash the feet last if you delayed them.

Common Questions About Ghusl

🚿
Do I need wudu after ghusl?
No. The ghusl already includes wudu, and as long as nothing breaks it afterwards, you may pray without renewing it. (Tirmidhi)
💧
Does my whole body need washing?
Yes, water must reach every part of the outer body, including the skin under the hair. Men need not undo plaits; women's tight braids may stay if water reaches the roots. (Muslim)
🧕
What about menstruation?
Once the period ends, ghusl is required before resuming prayer and fasting. Some scholars recommend using something scented during the ghusl after menses. (Bukhari)
🕌
Is Friday ghusl obligatory?
It is a strongly recommended sunnah before Jumu'ah, not obligatory in the view of most scholars. See our guide to the virtues of Jumu'ah.

Keeping yourself in a state of purity is part of the beauty of Islam. To learn what nullifies your ablution between washes, read what breaks wudu.
